Guest Bedroom Design

According to me, a guest bedroom is the hardest to design. A guest is a guest! This type of room has got a slightly different approach in the entire home. While designing a room for guests is not just providing the basic amenities and furniture. He/she must feel homely in this space. Just imagine a hotel room and your own room in your home, what’s the difference? Homeliness, of course.

Aspects of designing a guest bedroom

It is difficult to achieve this in a space which shall be used by an outsider. Since a guest is not here to stay forever, it is the duty of the designer to see that his stay becomes comfortable and he/she should enjoy the show.

This space should ideally have an attached toilet. If your home is a two story structure, preferably it should be on the ground floor. This does not disturb the privacy of the remaining house members.

Guest Bedroom Furniture

When it comes to picking up guest bedroom furniture many interesting design are possible. Firstly it must be noted that guests are not going to stay in your forever and this makes it possible for you to pick up furniture which is modular in type.

This is because depending upon how many people are going to occupy the guest bedroom you can quickly alter the form of the furniture and make space for extra people. One of the best ways to use modular type of furniture is to use folding types available in the market today.

If you do some research in the online marketplaces you’ll notice that there are many great and amazing designs available in the modular types of furniture units. One such cool design is the “futon bunk bed”. In this there are two layers of beds just like a normal bunk bed.

But one unique feature about this is that the bottom full size beds gets folded into half to form a sofa. So during day hours you can safely convert this into a sofa and use as a possible seating arrangement. This type of bunk bed is great for a family of four who is visiting your home as guests. In this way the children will feel safe that in the new space their parents are always with them and at the same time parents will be happy to have kids with them.

Guest Bedroom Color Schemes

Color schemes for the guest bedrooms must bed charming and inviting. You can easily make use of bright colors that will help in easy dispersion of light across the guest bedroom. Apart from the bright colors if you use a darker shade as a contrasting color then it will enhance the original bright shade expressing an amazing effect.

Along with the bright shades you can use artificial lighting to make focal points across the room. To make the guest feel comfortable you can use indoor flowering plants to bring life into the bedroom. Using plants is one of the best ways to create healthy environments and pump life into any interior space.

Child/Kid Bedroom Design

While designing a bedroom for children it is very much important to remember that children are dependent on parents for almost their every need. The basic of a room for children is that it should become a place to have fun and at the same time a learning tool.

Aspects of designing a child bedroom

Consider the location of room in a home. Ideally speaking, this space should be close to a master bedroom. Children have a unique quality in them, and that’s curiosity and this should reflect in the child bedroom design.

Furniture

As said earlier, a space with enough to explore is the key to success with this kind of space. That’s why this can be attained using cleverly designed furniture. A furniture which creates lot of niche spaces to explore or keep things is best suited for such spaces.

The type of furniture includes bunk beds, writing tables, beds with lot of storage spaces above or below can be designed. Some pieces of furniture can be movable types which can also be used as a toy.

Furniture in the shape of cartoon characters is a great way to do this.

Color schemes

Use of basic colors is best suited for this type of space. Since the human mind at this age is under development, use of complex shades may not be a suitable idea. A cleverly worked out flooring pattern can serve a great way to stimulate the adventurous energy in a child.

Plain colored walls with washable internal paint is a good suggestion. Since children have a lot of energy in them are prone to writing on walls. This is a typical way of expression while playing with other fellow friends.

A good way to design a child bedroom

A unique concept can be used to decorate a child bedroom. The walls of the room can be painted with a story. the walls of the room can be painted with various natural elements such as a house, trees, river, pond, sky, mountains, clouds, animals, etc. All these elements are learning tools. The use of objects and natural elements in pictorial form helps the child to learn what’s happening in the real world.

Also, the proportions of the room create a kind of security and a personal feeling. The volume of the room also represents the user’s age group.

Teen Bedroom Design

A teen bedroom is the one which is used by the teenagers of the family. In some families a teen bedroom is shared by brother sisters. While designing a teen bedroom a very important factors is freedom of expression. What’s that? let’s see.

Aspects of designing a teen bedroom

A space to express freedom: The teenage is an age when a boy or girl is becoming a man or woman. This is the age when role models are set, heroes are selected and this reflects in their actions and thoughts.

This is also the age when the boy or girl finds his/her passion in life. Be it cars, bikes, music, sports or anything else, they spend their entire energy in finding a definition to their life.

That’s why their bedroom should give them enough freedom to do this with ease and a teen should feel comfortable while doing this.

Allow enough space to express

In this space heavy furniture should be avoided. This allows them to shift the arrangement of furniture in their own room the way they want it.

Enough empty wall surface should be kept. As said earlier a teen is trying to find his own identity find looking towards a role model in real life, so he/she uses this empty wall surface to paste posters, motivational messages, his own paintings etc…

Ideas that reflect a perception of more space

Let’s see an example of a sample bedroom layout. See the image below, it is a furniture layout of a bedroom. I first drafted this furniture layout in a drafting software and then converted it into an image format.

This furniture layout contains a double bed, a wardrobe in front, a dressing table just next to the toilet door and a study table along with a chair with it.

The double bed also has two attached side tables. After arranging this layout the bedroom looks quite occupied. Because of the comparatively small dimensions (11′ X 14′) the bare minimum furniture can be arranged in this way.

Now by designing the furniture in a certain way we can easily make circulation space left, look bigger than it actually is.

How? Let’s see these two sectional images below. These are the sections taken through the double bed, crossing the wardrobe in front.

The section shows that there is a 2’6″ (0.75 meters Approx.) circulation space available between the wardrobe and the edge of the double bed. This is the minimum amount of space any person requires to walk without any disturbance. This space will also be used when the person opens the wardrobe shutter.

If you can see in the first section the double bed is a normal one, but in the second section the base of the double bed has been recessed by 1 feet so that the actual circulation space is increased by 1 feet. See the 3D image of the double bed below to get the exact idea of what I am trying to say.

This is a 3D model of the double bed in the above sectional sketch. See how altering the base structure of the bed creates more usable space in a bedroom. When scarcity of space is an issue, these kind of techniques are excellent for small bedrooms.

Master Bedroom Design

A master bedroom is the one which is used by the head of the family. A person who is responsible for the well-being of the home and entire family. Hence while designing a master bedroom special attention must be given to the size of the bedroom.

Interior design of a master bedroom is of vital importance. A master bedroom is normally has the biggest size amongst all other bedrooms. It is also a possibility that the architect of the building has preplanned the bedroom.

If this is the case the master bedroom is likely to have an attached toilet block, a terrace or a balcony, an exit to the outdoor landscaped court if the building is a ground floor structure.

Again while designing a master bedroom the entire home improvement strategy plays a major role as far as design theme, budget, time schedules are concerned.

As said earlier the person who uses this space is a responsible person, hence the designer must take into consideration various personality traits of the master, who uses this space.

Aspects of designing a master bedroom

There is a simple rule you can follow while designing your own space. Just forget all the theoretical design talk. Just go with what you like the most.

If you are trying to design your home yourself then you must know that it’s the small things that can make a major difference in the final appearance of your room. What really works in decorating a space is “detailing”.

There are thousands of factors that affect the beauty of any project. Let’s think about some ideas….

Play with lighting: Lighting plays a major role in any interior space, hence you should make a creative use of it. I mean artificial and natural lighting can be used very effectively in an interior space.

Since Sun is a major source of lighting during daytime, this can be used very creatively for creating “shadow patterns”. Light which penetrates through windows can be interrupted to create shadows on inside walls and thus create an interesting feature.

There is one more advantage of using this method. Since the Sun constantly keeps on shifting, (or is perceived to be in motion) the intensity, length, and angle of shadows will also change dynamically, creating a very excellent play of light.

As far as artificial lighting is concerned, and spotlights can be used to enhance certain areas of the space, by diverting attention. Many creative designs of decorative lamps and are available today at reasonable prices.

Wall Paintings are another excellent way to give a personality to a space. Depending upon the nature/subject of the painting the mood of an interior space can be altered.

Depending upon your likes and dislikes many beautiful wall paintings and posters are available in local stores, art galleries, etc…

Photographs of your family members is a great way to add a personal touch to your room.

Wall Hangings are a great way to add interest and are used as fillers on walls. A wall hanging can be just an art work or can even serve a purpose such as a letters holder. A wall hanging which goes with the theme of the room can greatly add interest to the room.

Bedroom Furniture

The bedroom furniture includes primarily a double bed, wardrobe, side tables, writing table, dressing table, if the bedroom has an attached terrace then an informal seating arrangement.

It is very important to choose the finishes and shades of the furniture very carefully, because the furniture replaces a portion of the wall and is directly visible when someone enters this space.

All above parameters considered while designing has an important consideration before finalizing and that’s BUDGET. A good designer is one who makes a balance between aesthetics, function and monetary part of any design project.

Use of natural elements is encouraging.

Use of natural elements such as small plants which bear flowers can greatly add to the beauty and aura of any space. Plants which are shade loving and bear flowers at least once in a month is a great choice.

This allows automatic change in the entire atmosphere of the room. Since the change their appearance after a few days, this aspect can be used as a mood generator in a room.

There is a very interesting viewpoint we can consider when it comes to decorating any space in a home. Every space in a home is just like human body. Our body is composed of various parts joined to the main torso, such as hands, arms, feet, legs, head etc.. All these when combined forms a uniform body.

In the same way a home is composed of living room, family room, bedrooms, kitchen, study rooms, toilet blocks, terraces, etc.. All these spaces have their own use from user’s point of view.

That’s why while designing a bedroom it is necessary to treat the space as a part of the rest of the home and not in isolation. It would be wise to look for the general design theme of the rest of the rooms before starting out on the primary sketches and budget decisions. I personally feel that design and decorating is all about “detailing”. Once you learn to work out simple “details”, decoration becomes almost an instant job.

You also get an excellent learning tool with thousands of real-life photographs and illustrations. As I said whatever you do in the rest of your rooms will affect your bedroom decorating project drastically.

Our Initial 2019 Design Projections

While we prioritize affordability and cherish D.I.Y. ethos, we are, at our core, interior designers. As such, we like to spend time brainstorming new and upcoming trends. We’re getting close to the end of 2018, which means most design studios and bedroom retailers will start to publish their 2019 design predictions. Here’s our take on the upcoming year – before anyone else gets their projections out into the world.

  1. Minimalism will continue to reign supreme. Are you over the minimalist thing yet? Neither are we! This is an excellent way to build affordability into your bedroom design. Decorating a room with simple photos, easy-to-assemble storage units, and perhaps the occasional floor plant will continue to dominate the interior bedroom design field.
  2. Low-lit rooms get some personality. Nobody likes to light their bedroom from the ceiling, but we’ve known that for a while. Geometric light fixtures are big for other parts of the home, such as the living and dining rooms, but this trend will begin to move out of the bedroom. Instead, we’ll likely begin to see decorative wall sconces, minimalist bedside table lamps, and simple but beautiful floor lamps. Don’t forget the LEDs!
  3. Natural materials get a spot onstage. The bedroom has recently come to represent a “healthy place” where we can sleep, relax, and do light activities – think reading and listening to music. The decorations should represent that dedication to relaxation. In 2019, we plan to see more wooden and woven furniture and decorative materials. Wooden beds have been in for a while, but deeper, darker stains are about to have a moment. That woven papasan chair you bought in the mid-aughts? That’s about to be trendy again, too.
