DIY Project: Upcycled Sweater Pillows

This is one of our easiest and favorite DIY projects. A throw pillow can spice up any room or piece of furniture, but they are often very, very expensive. This is an excellent way to save money, give your old sweaters a new lease on life, and add some color to your living space. The requried materials are listed below:

Materials:
– 1 old sweater
– 1 pillow (Newly purchased at Target or IKEA or recycled from another use)
– Sewing kit (needle and thread)
– Scissors
– Marking tool (pen, pencil, marker… anything, really)

Instructions:
To begin, turn your sweater inside out. Set on a large, flat surface, such as the floor or a kitchen table. Place the pillow onto your sweater and measure around, leaving a small margin to use for later sewing. We like to reserve at least an inch and a half just to be safe. Use a tool to mark the sweater, then cut along the lines. Repeat the process using the back of the sweater; you should have two identical swaths of fabric.

Sew these two pieces together but leave space to slip the pillow into the pocket. When you’re ready, insert the pillow and continue stitching until the fabric is completely closed. Nearly all of the sewing in this project can be completed with a sewing machine, but we recommend hand-stitching for those last few inches.

And… you’re done! It’s as easy as that! Depending on your sewing skills, this project shouldn’t take more than an hour of your time.
